The Vomero-nasal Apparatus in Chrysemys Punctata and Rana Catesbiana

چکیده

In a previous communication the writer ('12) described the vomero-nasal apparatus in the opossum and other mammals. It was shown that the vomero-nasal organ, the vomero-nasal nerves and the accessory olfactory bulb are parts of a special olfactory mechanism the specific function of which still remains doubtful. It is with the idea that a careful comparative study of this apparatus in the different animals may lead to a more definite understanding of its function that this study was undertaken. The observations about to be reported were based in part on serial sections of the heads of turtles and frogs and in phrt on dissections of prepared specimens of the same species. Wax plate reconstructions of the olfactory apparatus were made to show, so far as possible, the form and comparative size of its component parts. Figures 7 , 8, 15 and 16 represent drawings of these reconstructions.

Two types of chromaffin cells in the adrenals of the bullfrog, Rana catesbiana. A comparative study.

Two types of chromaffin cells have long been recognized in the adrenal medulla of various vertebrate species (see KOLMER, 1918), BANDER (1950), for the first time, correlated these types of chromaffin cells with two different types of hormones secreted by the adrenal medulla, noradrenaline and adrenaline. Only one type of chromaffin cell has been known in the frog adrenals. According to its his...

The effect of removal of the anterior lower sac on the lateral appendix in the embryonic olfactory organ of Kaloula borealis (Barbour).

INTBODUCTION IN previous investigations on the development of the olfactory organ of S a n a n i g r o m a c u l a t a (Tsui, 1946a) and Kaloula boreal is (Tsui and Pan, 1946) it was found that the lateral appendix is suddenly arrested in its development at the appearance of the anterior lower sac and gradually degenerates as this sac further grows. It was suggested (Tsui, 1946&) that the later...

Head morphology of the duckbill eel, Hoplunnis punctata (Regan, 1915; Nettastomatidae: Anguilliformes) in relation to jaw elongation.

Hoplunnis punctata, a member of the Anguilliformes, is a long-snouted eel that lives in benthic habitats of the continental shelf of tropical waters. The purpose of this study was to examine the skull morphology of this little known nettastomatid and to understand the changes associated with jaw elongation as well as the implications of jaw elongation on the feeding apparatus. We present a deta...

Laboratory evaluation of three strains of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae for controlling Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum and Haemaphysalis punctata

Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum and Haemaphysalis punctata larval ticks were shown to be susceptible to different strains of entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae under laboratory conditions. To determine the susceptibility of H. anatolicum anatolicum and H. punctata to M. anisopliae, two suspensions of conidia were used (103 and 104 spores/ml). The treatments were conducted by immersing...
